First and foremost, God isn’t interested in your money and neither are we. The Bible says, “Truly no man can ransom another, or give to God the price of his life”. (Ps 49:7) In other words, you can’t buy off God, the almighty Creator of the Universe. Before you give anything to God’s church, receive the free unmerited grace God offers so that you can be restored in relationship with him as he intended. Giving then becomes a response to God’s grace in our lives.

HOW MUCH SHOULD I GIVE?
So then, if it’s a responsive act of worship, how much money should Christians give? Should we tithe (give 10% of our income)? The New Testament doesn’t specify a tithe, but we have greater responsibility for generosity this side of the cross. In 2 Corinthians 8:1-5, we see the Macedonian Christians sacrificing much for the sake of the early Church’s work. In fact, they gave as much as they could… and then gave even more. (2 Cor 8:3)
More important than what we give, however, is why we give. In 2 Corinthians 9:7, Paul says that “God loves a cheerful giver.” Joy is the standard of giving, not an amount or percentage. Indeed, in Mark 12:41-44, Jesus praised the widow’s penny more than the larger offerings because of the heart behind her offering. The difference between giving to gain favor with God and true Christian giving is that a Christian, saved by grace, wants to give as generously as he or she received. You always give effortlessly to those things that give your life meaning.
We are thankful that so many joyfully give to Hope Chapel without any obligation except in response to God’s grace in their lives. These donations of finances, time, and talent enable us to grow into a missional church that joyfully supports missionaries and sacrificially helps the needy in order to make disciples that make disciples that make disciples.
